A Family Tradition
Marion Campbell is possibly the most famous member of this family of Harris Tweed weavers, she followed in the footsteps of both her mother and elder sister Maggie-Sarah, who taught the young ‘Morag’ (Marion) her craft. The family home was in Plockropool a small village close to Drinishader, where the generations of Campbells attended the local primary school.
Alistair Campbell is Marion’s nephew, son of her half brother also named Alistair. Marion was instrumental in the upbringing of Alistair and was looked upon more of a grandparent by Alistair and Katie’s children.
Katie was the daughter of Norman and Jane Macdonald. She married Alistair in 1960 and the couple lived next door to Marion, where they brought up daughter Catherine and her three brothers.
Today Catherine carries on the family tradition, but Drinishaders Primary School now houses the Harris Tweed and Knitwear shop. Where the local children once studied, now visitors enjoy Harris Tweed weaving demonstrations and can visit the Harris Tweed Exhibition housed in a smart purpose built centre behind the school.
